Bullets in Mongolia

If you’re ever in Mongolia, give Mongolia River Adventures a call. Pat Phillips and his Mongolian partner Bulgaa run Bullets down multiple rivers including the Selenge Gol, Suman Gol, Ag Su, Kharatas Gol, Khovd Gol, Turgan Gol and more. It’s the frontier of river exploration in Mongolia and Bullet is excited to be a partner and support the dream. Most shipping companies wouldn’t attempt to send a boat to Mongolia, but Bullet worked with MRA and got a custom built Bullet there ahead of schedule. Keep an eye our for it in their promotional video.

Upper Wind (~7 miles)

Greetings from Europe, where we’re checking out rivers from Spain to the Balkans. There is excellent whitewater scattered all over this continent and great people to share it with. Enjoy the Euro-remix of a trip down Washington’s Upper Wind River, a class III/IV section of the upper wind only 45 minutes from downtown Portland, OR. The run has three class IV rapids, and plenty of fun class III to keep things interesting.  This run was a low water, about 600 cfs.  Keep in mind that it can become much more demanding at higher flows.  A writeup can be found at Oregon Kayaking.

Breitenbush Creek, OR (~9 miles)

The Breitenbush is one of the northwest’s classic Class IV runs in a beautiful, tight gorge outside of Salem, OR.  Somewhere in between the pizzazz of PROKAPs and the Japanese Pop video above, you can catch glimpses of the Breitenbush’s stunning blue water and excellent rapids. Flow in the video is about 600 cfs. Continue reading …

Desolation Canyon, Green River, UT (~84 miles)

A Blood Meridian Bullet 14 runs Joe Hutch Rapid on the Desolation Canyon section of Utah’s Green River.  This is a spectacular section of the Green river; one of Utah’s best multi-day runs.  Because of its high quality, it is a permitted section of river, with permit details available through the Department of the Interior’s BLM website.  For new boaters considering Desolation Canyon, here’s a trip writeup that provides some historical context as well great details on logistics, food, and the river itself.

Upper Klammath River, CA J.C. Boyle to Copco Reservoir (~16 miles)

Arguably the most continuous commercially run class IV runs in Northern California, the upper Klammath river provides the setting for action packed 1 and 2-day trips.  Stern frames are very common, helping guides make technical moves without having to rely exclusively on a crew.  The run starts with some class III warmup, but then quickly meets Caldera, a longer class IV+ rapid.  Rapids come in quick succession, including Hell’s Corner, the river’s second big rapid.  For boaters with solid skills, the Upper-Klammath is a long one day that tests your ability to execute technical maneuvers and stick to your lines.

Outfitters running the “Upper K” are based in Ashland and Mt. Shasta, while private boaters Continue reading …

A Bullet 12 ST on Arizona's San Juan

The San Juan has excellent one-day and multi-day rafting options in both Utah and Arizona.  A custom-colored 6’11″ wide Bullet 12 ST gear boat floats through the bends of the San Juan in Arizona this spring.  For more information on logistics and multi-day raft options on the San Juan, take a look at Canyon Rio’s Page.   The 2011 Bullet 12 ST has 20″ tubes, removable thwarts, and four tube chambers; creating a 6’11″ wide geometry ideal for multi-day rafting and fishing trips.

Green Truss of the White Salmon (~5 miles)

Solo’ing the Green Truss of Washington’s White Salmon in August. This was a great semi-continuous run with lots of drops and plenty to keep it interesting. Continue reading …

Lower Wind River (~3 miles)

In late July, we enjoyed a couple of great runs down the Lower Wind River. While this is one of the more challenging runs for an R1 or even R2 boater, it’s also one of the most rewarding. With continuous class II/III to start it off, a great section of 12′ to 15′ waterfalls and slides, and a culminating soak in excellent hot-springs, the Lower Wind is definitely a river to return to again and again. Upper Rogue Gold Nugget (~4 miles)

We joined a 1/2-day trip down the upper-Rogue with Momentum River Expeditions, who also happen to run Bullet Watercraft commercially.  The run is a great 1/2-day trip, starting off smoothly with some fun class II before the Rogue reaches Class IV Nugget Falls Continue reading …
